Responsibilities

Overview & Scope Of Role:

To lead the Pantograph department in delivering efficient, safe, and high-quality manufacturing and repair services. The Supervisor will oversee people, processes, machinery, and customer interactions, ensuring alignment with the thinkSAFE culture, Lean principles, customer expectations, and internal standards. The role involves direct supervision of workshop staff, coordination with other departments, and accountability for performance metrics, reporting, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

To include but not limited to:

 Safety Leadership & Compliance

  • Drive and embed the thinkSAFE culture across the Pantograph department, leading by example with Visual Safety Leadership (VSL).
  • Ensure all safety procedures are followed, including proper use of PPE, safe operation of machinery, and workplace hazard control.
  • Conduct daily safety checks, ensure all incidents and near misses are reported, and take corrective action.
  • Oversee the opening and closing of offices daily and manage the key register and building access control.

 

Production Oversight & Operational Planning

  • Oversee day-to-day workshop operations, ensuring on-time delivery of manufactured and repaired pantograph components.
  • Plan, coordinate, and monitor production activities including output, quality, cost control, labour, overtime, and resource utilization.
  • Analyse time sheets daily for Pantograph employees to ensure productivity and efficiency.
  • Coordinate three-monthly stock takes and ensure effective material tracking and booking.

Process Optimisation & Lean Manufacturing

  • Continuously evaluate and improve work procedures, implement LEAN production techniques, and remove inefficiencies.
  • Ensure that departmental procedures are strictly followed and updated when necessary.
  • Promote 5S and best practices in workplace organization and cleanliness.

Quality Assurance & Customer Interface

  • Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction through responsiveness, technical accuracy, and timely updates.
  • Manage customer product receiving and ensure accurate, clear documentation and control.
  • Generate and approve quotations and scopes of work in conjunction with internal sales and technical teams.
  • Coordinate with quality and calibration teams to ensure measuring equipment is calibrated within required intervals.

Staff Supervision & Human Resource Coordination

  • Lead, train, and supervise production teams, ensuring optimal staffing and adherence to HR policies.
  • Identify skills gaps and ensure all training requirements are completed.
  • Manage recruitment, disciplinary procedures, and employee performance in collaboration with HR.
  • Ensure correct PPE is issued and used, and that staff fully understand and follow safety protocols.

Reporting, Communication & Coordination

  • Provide daily, weekly, and monthly production and operations reports including performance metrics, delays, incidents, and outstanding work.
  • Submit a monthly summary report with suggestions and improvements.
  • Maintain constant communication with the Production Manager and coordinate effectively with internal sales, maintenance, stores, quality, and engineering.
  • Ensure real-time data capturing, accurate booking of materials, and documentation of all activities.
  • Interface with customers and sales representatives to resolve queries and align expectations.

 

 

Qualifications

NQF Level 4 or higher in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Production Management.

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a production or workshop environment, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.

Familiarity with pantograph components and repairs is a strong advantage.

Excellent knowledge of manufacturing operations and workshop coordination.

Proficient in MS Office, production tracking systems, and ERP software.

Good understanding of calibration, ISO standards, and quality inspection processes.

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings as well as scopes of work.

Strong PLOC (Plan, Lead, Organize, and Control) fundamentals

Knowledge of SOP & WI

Leadership & Supervision – Track record of managing teams, set clear expectations, and hold staff accountable.

Operational Excellence – Skilled in planning, resource management, and workflow process.

Technical Understanding – Good grasp of pantograph systems, machinery, and manufacturing practices. Understanding of measuring equipment and adequate utilisation.
