PERFORMANCE CARBON GLOBAL BUSINESS UNIT OVERVIEW

The Performance Carbon global business of Morgan Advanced Materials designs, manufactures and sells a broad range of high-performance solutions for rotary transfer systems, linear transfer systems, electrical carbon systems and high-performance self-lubricating bearing and seal components.

 

The Performance Carbon business unit was recently established following a merger between the Electrical Carbon and Seals & Bearings business unit. The Performance Carbon business unit organizational design is functionally structured. The organization set-up enables us to improve supply chain, manufacturing and reporting processes as well as share best-practices amongst peers to enable us to grow and expand our margins.

 

OVERVIEW & SCOPE OF THE ROLE

 

The Senior Cost Accountant position is responsible for the ongoing data analysis of changes in product design, bills of material, and manufacturing methods to determine effects on cost within the three manufacturing sites located in Pennsylvania (ie. St. Marys and Coudersport) and North Carolina (Dunn). The Senior Cost Accountant must also construct and monitor those cost-effective data accumulation systems needed to provide an appropriate level of costing information to management.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Prepare, analyze and report weekly, monthly, and quarterly gross margin analysis by site and/or business stream
  2. Actively participate in month end closing process. Responsible for all inventory related journal entries (Shop Floor, COGS, Scrap, LCM calculations, monthly Blank and FG reserves etc). Prepare monthly inventory rollforward and reconciliations and perform analysis as needed on changes in value.
  3. Work closely with the Operations Teams at all three sites understanding and analyzing shop floor reporting, job closure transactions and daily/weekly inventory transactions for proper reporting within the General Ledger.
  4. Maintain Cost Accounting system within ERP and update as needed.
  5. Conduct physical inventories as needed and monitor cycle count process.
  6. Lead the Annual Cost Roll for the three sites. Calculate Standard Rates  that will absorb all budgeted DL, VOH, and FOH costs included in Variable COGS.  Perform absorption analysis as needed to ensure that the new rates will fully absorb DL, VOH and FOH costs.  Copy current costs to Frozen costs for all active P/N’s on December 31st of each year and post the inventory valuation entry during the January close of each year.
  7. Analyze actual manufacturing costs and prepare reports comparing standard costs to actual production cost. Investigate variances and determine root cause.
  8. Maintain internal control documentation and test internal controls
  9. Prepare detailed account analysis and reconcile sales, cost, inventory, and reserves
  10. Review and analyze inventory and margin reports, conduct research, and perform analytical studies relative to cost and profitability.
  11. Ensure timely submission, accuracy and validity of inventory, gross margin schedules to management
  12. Take a leading role on the team during each monthly close in support of the Controller.
  13. Compile data for weekly WOPR Report and presentation in weekly discussions.
  14. Work on special projects as required. (compiling data for capex requests, assist with Fixed asset audits and verification of assets.)
  15. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years experience as Cost Accountant in a Manufacturing environment.
  • BA/BS degree in Accounting, or commensurate experience
  • Excellent analysis skills; extremely proficient with Excel
  • The ability to collaborate with a multi-department team
  • Ability to apply knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles & Cost Accounting Standards. IFRS knowledge a plus.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics a plus

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to adapt to new and different computer programs and software to enable efficient data gathering and analysis
  • Ability to research, compile, analyze and interpret data
  • Good written, verbal communication and collaborative skills
  • Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to analyze and reconcile complex accounts and reserves
  • Strong organizational and communicational skills
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work well with peers and superiors in all departments of the Company
  • Must be able to work well with external contacts of the Company
  • Must have good time management, planning and negotiation skills
  • Must adhere to all Company policies

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be capable of sitting and using a computer for the majority of an 8-hour workday
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds
  • Must be capable of traveling within the US
