Overview

Job Title: Toolmaker / Toolroom Machinist

Responsible to: Maintenance Manager

 

To carry out machining duties on tooling equipment for routine maintenance, repairs, reconditioning, assembly, and manufacture of production tooling and products to required standards.

Responsibilities

  • Proficient in using various metric and imperial, manual and CNC workshop equipment including machining centres, lathes, milling machines, universal grinders, internal and external grinders, surface grinders, pillar drilling, and power saws.
  • Skilled in using various metric and imperial measuring equipment including vernier type gauges, clock gauges, micrometers, etc.
  • Manufacture, maintain, and repair production tooling including bolster sets, jigs, and fixtures to the required standard.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all types of engineering materials.
  • Competent in reading, understanding, and following working drawings accurately.
  • Work safely and responsibly at all times in accordance with health & safety regulations.
  • Maintain a clean, organised working environment conforming to relevant Health & Safety and environmental standards.
  • Work autonomously on a daily basis maintaining a sufficient workload.
  • Undertake self-inspection of work.
  • Perform basic, routine maintenance of equipment in accordance with manufacturer and HSE guidance.
  • Responsible for identifying, ordering, and organising consumables, spares, tooling, and materials, ensuring adequate stockholding.
  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors as required.
  • Proficient in operating gas and electric welding/brazing equipment.
  • Maintain detailed logs and records of all toolroom activities.
  • Help, advise, and mentor apprentices/understudies whenever possible.
  • Proactive in identifying and anticipating production problems.
  • Carry out improvement projects when identified.
  • Adhere to company regulations, rules, and procedures.
  • Perform other reasonable facilities/maintenance duties on site and provide specialist skills as required within any production cell.
  • Support the Maintenance Manager with delegated duties.
  • Available for overtime and flexible hours when reasonably requested

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience in a precision engineering or toolmaking environment.
  • Experience in tooling maintenance and repair, including bolster sets, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings and the ability to interpret and work from them accurately.
  • Apprenticeship-trained in Toolmaking, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering or Toolmaking.
  • Health & Safety training, including manual handling and machine safety awareness.
