Responsibilities

Job Purpose:

  • Research and develop products, raw materials, and classification grades
  • Manage the design, prototyping, and testing during product development
  • Accurately assess products to ensure they meet desired functionality and standards
  • Contribute to improving customer satisfaction through delivering superior products
  • Drive business growth through reducing production costs and improving yields
  • Ensure colleagues receive technical support throughout the production process

What You’ll Do:

  • Conduct research on the structures, properties, and applications of materials
  • Determine the design properties and materials necessary to produce products
  • Develop new raw materials for future products, ensuring they are fit for purpose
  • Research methods of processing, forming, and firing materials to develop products
  • Support the design and production of cost-effective, high-quality, and high-yield products
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation for new and existing products
  • Provide thorough specification definition and engage in product testing and refinement ahead of production
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of customer needs and trends within the field
  • Determine the suitability of current products for end-user needs
  • Communicate with customers regularly to resolve common technical issues
  • Develop and maintain detailed access databases for use within the lab and document material development progress
  • Provide technical support for technicians, engineers, and scientists within R&D and other departments
  • Analyse product failure data and laboratory test results to determine the causes of problems and find relevant solutions
  • Manage projects effectively, ensuring that high-quality products are delivered on time and that customers are satisfied
  • Develop an understanding of customer needs, and develop new and existing products in line with these requirements
  • Establish and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with customers and colleagues
  • Act as a technical expert on products and processes and communicate complex information to others
  • Prepare documentation and reports on the status or progress of products for use by technical teams
  • Upgrade and maintain equipment within the lab

What You’ll Bring:

  • University education or equivalent, including science-related subjects, and maths
  • Experience in the practical application of engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of mechanical goods
  • In-depth knowledge of research and development methods and processes
  • Materials matter knowledge e.g. ceramic matrix composites, metal matrix composites, ceramics, polymers, etc.
  • Knowledge of process development methodology and project management
  • Basic understanding of the main principles of lean manufacturing
  • Fluency in English

Technology & Systems: Analytical or scientific software, Microsoft Teams, Minitab Software, Project Software
